Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to the most common questions we get asked
Does changing my garage door add value to my house?
Your garage doors can account for up to 30 percent of the exterior portion of a home that is visible from the street. The style, color, and condition of the door has a great influence on the overall appearance and curb appeal of the home. Remodeling magazine’s 2017 Cost vs. Value Report revealed that garage door replacement is one of the best ways to increase home value (Aug 1, 2017).
How often should my overhead garage door be serviced?
Your overhead garage door is the largest piece of moving equipment in your home. Most families use their garage door more than their front door. In order to ensure a properly working door and operator, you should have your overhead garage door and operator serviced every year. The noises your door or operator make are your initial “warnings” that something is not quite right. The longer you put off the necessary service, the more damage may result. Regular service can extend the life of your door and operator.
We heard a loud bang in the garage and can not open the garage door. What happened?
It is very highly likely that you have a broken spring that should be replaced by an experienced and qualified garage door service technician. If your springs (torsion springs) are on a shaft across the top of the door, you will see an approx 2″ separation in the spring. If your springs (extension springs) stretch along the track on the sides you will find that they are very obviously in two separate pieces. It is recommended that you replace both springs if only one is broken since they both have the same wear and tear.
What is a Battery Backup and do I need one?
A Battery Backup feature has a battery that continues to operate the garage door opener even when the power is out, helping residents, homeowners and property managers through unforeseen, inconvenient outages. These units often supply power for up to two days, so even after 24 hours of standby time (i.e., full-day power outage), garage door opener will still perform 20 full “up and down” cycles. We recommend all of our customers consider this feature when purchasing a new operator.
Do I need to have the Fire Doors in my business tested?
Yes! Fire doors need to be drop tested every year to ensure proper option in the case of an emergency. Often the Fire Dept. requires “drop tests” every year but check with your local fire dept.
Why do I need my Fire door tested?
NFPA standards require building owners and managers to have their rolling and sliding fire doors inspected and tested annually, and to maintain written documentation of such inspections. Canada West can help you stay compliant and keep your buildings fire doors in proper operation.
